Vanaf 16 februari wordt venetoclax (Venclyxto) in combinatie met een hypomethylerend middel (HMA) - azacitidine of decitabine - vergoed vanuit het basispakket van de zorgverzekering. De vergoeding is voor de behandeling van volwassen patiënten met acute myeloïde leukemie (AML) die nog niet eerder behandeld zijn en die niet in aanmerking komen voor intensieve chemotherapie1. Hierover heeft AbbVie een akkoord bereikt met het Ministerie van VWS.
AML is een vorm van bloedkanker die ontstaat in het beenmerg. Door verschillende veranderingen aan het DNA ontstaat er een overmatige productie van abnormale, onrijpe witte bloedcellen (myeloblasten). Onvoldoende beenmergfunctie leidt daarnaast tot een tekort aan rode bloedcellen (anemie), bloedplaatjes (trombocytopenie) en normale witte bloedcellen (lymfopenie, vooral granulopenie en neutropenie). Jaarlijks krijgen iets minder dan 800 mensen in Nederland de diagnose AML.2
Venetoclax richt zich op het BCL-2 eiwit en herstelt zo het proces van geprogrammeerde celdood, waardoor kankercellen makkelijker kunnen sterven.
Eerder is venetoclax al opgenomen voor vergoeding in het basispakket voor de behandeling van chronische lymfatische leukemie (CLL) als monotherapie, in combinatie met rituximab en in combinatie met obinutuzumab. Nu wordt venetoclax ook toegelaten voor de behandeling van AML. Het betreft een vergoeding tot 31 december 2026.
